Kulmbach: free surfing in the city center

Sitting in one of kulmbach's cafes and surfing the internet was previously only possible using a smartphone or surfstick. Thanks to the installation of wifi hotspots, i.E. Wireless and cost-free internet access points, it is now possible to surf for 30 minutes free of charge with any internet-enabled device at three locations in the city center.

But the hotspots also offer smartphone users some advantages, because if you dial in via the open wifi, you don't have to use your own data volume. What's more, the wifi offered by kabel deutschland is faster than the network received via cell phone.

It should work in three steps: first the hotspot has to be found. If you know where they are (see map), all you have to do is turn on the wifi. Otherwise the app "hotspotfinder" helps, so a small program in which all hotspots are listed throughout germany.

Not everyone surfs indefinitely
After the hotspot has been selected with a click, the device is connected automatically. To use the network, you have to register on the kabel deutschland website. This is where you decide whether you can surf for 30 minutes or unlimited time.

While kabel deutschland customers can log in with their access data, which normally applies to the customer portal, and then surf without limits, non-customers must confirm the terms of business and can then click on the "start" button-button for 30 minutes of surfing.

Mayor henry schramm is pleased about the open wifi network: "providing our citizens with internet access is a high priority." And the head of the tourism and event service of the city of kulmbach, helmut volkl, adds: "of course this is also a gain for our tourists. The city app, which we have had since april, is well received and, with open wifi, will certainly be used even more often."

Without a gap
Wifi will be available within a radius of 150 meters from the hotspots. The practical thing is that they are close enough together so that you can get from one hotspot area to the next without suffering from a network leak. This was confirmed by a self-experiment yesterday afternoon in the city.
